Keeping Your Holiday Green

Keeping Your Holiday Green

This time of year can be frightfully fun. If you are one to embrace the whole ambiance and good cheer of holiday festivities it can sometimes come with a price. Many people feel so carefree and joyful at this time they can forget about their green role. However, there is no better time to keeping your holiday green than right now. It is your opportunity to not only seek out the best holiday alternatives, such as recycled wrapping paper and energy efficient decorative lighting, it is also a time to spread the green mission through gift giving and more. Don’t let this holiday blind you with joy, but rather jolt you with the chance to go greener than ever before (along with the joy of course).

Local Cheer

treeSupporting any local business, from cutting down your own tree to purchasing farm fresh organic meats and produce, is a great way to kick off the holidays. Explain to friends and family how your tree was grown on a nearby, ecologically conscious orchard that refunds a portion of your money when you return the tree for mulching. Describe that organic local food is handled way less than imported items decreasing bacteria, land decimation, unnecessary fertilizer and pesticide residue as well as enormous fossil fuel delivery pollution. Or how all the gifts you purchased came from area artisans.

Correct Your Cards

Before you grab a box or two of those trendy holiday greeting cards remember that many of them are made with virgin paper and landfill unfriendly ribbons, foil and the like. Instead, look for simple recycled cards that may even have a stamp of green approval on the back. Search off the beaten path shops like health food stores, mom and pop bookstores or new age companies hawking cards made from sustainable materials as well as possibly have a green message.

Give a Green Gift

Some green gifts are obvious. They can be made from all sorts of eco-friendly materials such as bagasse, bamboo, biodegradables and more. It is a great way to turn people on or remind them of the importance of these materials. Other green gifts can be clever ways to catapult someone into the green movement without them even knowing it. These can be items such as a rechargeable battery kit that comes with all standard battery sizes to avoid the billions of toxic disposables leaking into our landfills daily. Or, a solar panel backpack or messenger bag complete with a built in phone, laptop, etc. charger.

Contact the Junk

More trees are wasted at this time of year than any other. Catalogues and other mailings pile up in depressing numbers making it practically essential to contact as many companies as you can to be taken off their mailing list.

Keeping your holiday green can be a lot easier than you think. Doing it in clever, graceful ways will maintain the respect you deserve from naysayers and hopefully help move the butts of some fence sitters.
