Green Travel

Traveling by rail is a smart, stress free experience with a real sense of adventure. According to a World Resource Institute (WRI) study and Amtrak, “trains produce an average of 0.21 kg of carbon per passenger mile. This is compared to 0.35 kg of carbon per passenger mile for car transport and 0.48 kg of carbon per passenger mile for air travel. This comes from an average of between 8 and 12 MPG for an entire passenger train.” Amtrak is a huge proponent of carbon footprint reduction implementing electric trains (The Acela) and regenerative braking technology. Electric train power reports an additional 8% drop in energy consumption and the regenerative braking design reduces the energy output used for stopping.

Tennessee: The Electric Vehicle Friendly State and the Great Beyond

Why not put Tennessee on your list of fossil fuel free (or considerably reduced) summer travel places to explore. This state claims to have the most available and efficient electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure making plugging in a simple experience. You can Amtrak into Memphis which is an awesome city full of many cultural attractions, then rent an EV vehicle and start your adventure. Visit places like Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Nashville, Ruby Falls and more. If you want to push the envelope and branch out, no worries, map your path along the over 2000 charging stations across the United States. If long distance is an issue and an EV cannot handle it, do the next best thing and rent a hybrid. Depart from home to anywhere you desire leaving your gas hog behind. An automobile carbon footprint is approximately 72% smaller than flying from city to city. FYI, an 8 hour drive in a BMW 750i costs approximately $100.00 in gas while a Lexus CT 2000 Hybrid would need half that.

Green Hotels

Your carbon footprint can be considerably offset when choosing many available eco-friendly hotels. You should be willing to forego such things as daily fresh towels as well as using energy saving air conditioners. Many online travel plan sites offer a discount when booking in a green hotel. If there is no option where you are traveling or you would rather stay in another choice then take the lead and make your accommodations personally green. Hang the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on the door to forego a room change and reuse your sheets, towels, toiletries etc. This is also a good theft deterrent.
Hopefully these carbon footprint summer travel suggestions will assist in healing the environment and offer you a great, green vacation getaway.
