Green Toys

Follow these ten easy suggestions to help make the best green choices for your little ones.

1. Pick green plastics

Go green with toys made from non-toxic, recycled and recyclable plastics. Especially be sure to avoid PVC and polycarbonate (#3 and #7, respectively), which leach chemical additives. You’ll be keeping dangerous chemicals like BPA and phthalates away from your kids and helping the environment by avoiding petroleum-derived plastics. Greenhome carries a number of toys made from recycled plastic, including a truck and race carpizza play setstacking number set, and a radio flyer wagon.

2. Get educational

Educational toys can be a fun, easy way to teach your little ones about the importance of being environmentally conscious. Play the Earthopoly board game to explain the dangers of global warming and pollution or give them eco-flashcards to give them ideas about ways they can help the earth.

3. Go secondhand

Cut down on waste and save money by giving old toys a new home. Just be sure to clean secondhand toys thoroughly and be cautious with toys produced before the 1970s that might contain lead-based paints.

4. Stick with natural fabrics

Avoid harsh chemical dyes and additives by giving your kids stuffed animals made from organic, natural fibers like these bunnieswhales, and puppies.

5. Buy local

Support local businesses by buying local, handmade toys. You’ll be reducing the amount of energy used to transport products and giving back to your community.

6. Look for eco-friendly wood products

Wood can make safe, long-lasting toys. Chose products that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)  to have come from sustainably managed forests and be sure that any paints used are lead-free and non-toxic.

7. Be creative

Allow your kids to show their creative side with arts and crafts projects. Look for safe, non-toxic paints and supplies like those in this paint your own instrument kit.

8. Say no to packaging

Americans throw away over 60 million tons of plastic, paper, and glass packaging every year. Help reduce that waste by avoiding toys that come with lots of added packaging, especially hard to recycle plastics or Styrofoam.

9. Stay away from batteries

Batteries pose a serious choking hazard for small children and can cause serious injury when ingested. Keep your kids safe (and help them stay creative!) by avoiding electronic toys. Skip remote controlled cars in favor of race cars they power themselves or chose musical instruments instead of video games.

10. Buy fair-trade

You can help ensure the well-being of your kids and others by buying fair trade products. The people who make these toys will have been paid a fair wage and been guaranteed collective bargaining rights, and most fair trade certifications also guarantee the sustainability of production methods.
